County Durham horror film goes viral with festive slasher hit

Dean Midas’s latest short film, Christmas Eve, has drawn more than 10,000 views in just six days, despite being made on a budget of just £50.

The film is available to watch for free on YouTube and introduces a new holiday slasher, Eve Valentine.

Mr Midas, who is based in Willington, said: “To see 10,000 people engage with Christmas Eve in less than a week is overwhelming.

“This was a massive team effort, and I want to say a huge thank you to my incredible cast and crew—specifically Sophie, Dawn, Jason and Wayne—who worked tirelessly to help me bring this vision to life.

“I also want to thank the Manor House Hotel & Spa West Auckland for their hospitality and all the press and media outlets and everyone who have supported us.”

The horror short is being celebrated as a “miracle” given the challenges faced by independent filmmakers.

Mr Midas credited much of the film’s atmosphere to the Manor House Hotel & Spa in West Auckland.

He said: “I also want to thank the Manor House Hotel & Spa West Auckland for their hospitality.”

His ability to achieve viral success on YouTube without significant marketing spend highlights the power of digital platforms for independent creators.

The filmmaker has described the film’s performance as “overwhelming.”

The film is available now via Dean Midas Films on YouTube.
