Young Darlington performer joins landmark Long Day’s Journey tour

Macy Stasiak will appear as Cathleen in Elysium Theatre Company’s production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugine O’Neill, which will be performed at the Arts Centre Washington.

Directed by Jake Murray, the tour marks the 70th anniversary of the play’s publication and brings the Pulitzer Prize-winning work to northern audiences.

Set over a single day in August 1912, the play explores addiction, resentment and family conflict within the Tyrone family.

Mr Murray said: “Long Day’s Journey Into Night is our most ambitious production yet.

“I grew up reading O’Neill and this play has always been one of my favourites.

“My father directed it for the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester when I was 14, and directing this now myself is a fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

“We believe it will strike a chord, and I cannot wait to see what people think of it.”

The cast includes Elysium co-founder Danny Solomon as Jamie Tyrone, alongside Edmund Dehn, Sarah Dorsett, and Daniel Bradford.

Matt Blyth, culture and heritage officer at Arts Centre Washington, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Elysium Theatre Company to ACW with such a landmark production.

“This is a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience one of the great masterpieces of modern drama on their doorstep.”

Although frequently revived in London and internationally, opportunities to see the play outside major metropolitan theatres have been rare.

Performances at Arts Centre Washington begin on Wednesday, May 27, as part of a three-week northern tour.

The tour will visit the North East across three consecutive weeks in May. It opens on 12 May at Queen’s Hall Arts in Hexham, before moving to Southpaw Dance Studios in Sunderland on 13 May, Town Hall Theatre in Hartlepool on 14 May, and Northern Stage in Newcastle on 15 May, rounding off the first week at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond on 16 May. In the second week, performances take place at Ushaw House in County Durham on 18 May, Gala Theatre in Durham on 19 May and Alnwick Playhouse on 21 May. The final North East dates fall in week three, with the production at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium in Yarm on 25 May, The Witham in Barnard Castle on 26 May and Arts Centre Washington on 27 May.

Tickets start at £10 and are available through Sunderland Culture’s website.
