First airing in 2011 and concluding with its 14th and final series on January 2 2025, the Brenda Blethyn-led drama became one of the North East’s most recognisable ambassadors on screen.
As DCI Vera Stanhope untangled complex murder cases, viewers were treated to coastal views, historic market towns, former industrial heartlands and remote moorland scenery that together gave the show its intended look.

At the heart of the series was Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, which served as the exterior of Vera’s solitary coastal home.
Cut off twice daily by the tide, the island’s causeway, beaches and big Northumberland skies provided a fitting reflection of the detective’s introspective character.
Just down the coast, Bamburgh’s vast dunes and iconic castle delivered some of the drama’s most striking visuals, while Seahouses Harbour and the nearby Farne Islands also brought scenic shots.
Amble and neighbouring Warkworth frequently appeared with their busy marina and historic charm, while Alnmouth’s colourful houses and sweeping beach were transformed into the fictional village of Mardle.

Inland, Hexham regularly doubled as the fictional town of Bentham, with its market square, abbey and local pubs forming the backdrop to a lot of the show.
Corbridge’s stone-built streets and surrounding countryside added a quieter, timeless feel to episodes steeped in local history.
The wild landscapes of Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall also played their part, offering dramatic isolation and panoramic views.
Along the coast, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth were firm favourites, with landmarks such as St Mary’s Lighthouse and the seafront promenade appearing on screen.

South Shields and North Shields blended maritime heritage with urban grit, while North Blyth’s docks and industrial sites played a part in filming too.
Newcastle and Gateshead featured prominently throughout the show’s 14-series run.
Newcastle stood in for the fictional Northumberland & City Police headquarters, and locations including the Castle Keep and streets around Elswick were used for filming.

Across the Tyne, Gateshead Quayside and Dunston Staithes became familiar sights to loyal viewers, capturing the mix of regeneration and history that defines the riverside.
County Durham also played a significant role over the years, with Seaham seafront offering dramatic coastal scenes and villages such as Edmundbyers providing expansive moorland backdrops.
Chester-le-Street saw a Front Street café transformed into a bustling filming location, attracting crowds of fans, while Darlington was featured several times across the TV series.
On the Teesside coast, Hartlepool’s Headland and Ward Jackson Park appeared in later series, and Redcar’s Esplanade and beachfront were used in one of the show’s final storylines.
While the cameras stopped rolling almost a year ago, the impact of the series remains visible and still brings tourists to the region who want to see where Vera was filmed.
